Beach house vignette

After art classes yesterday, I spent some time working on the beach house makeover. Ably assisted by Suzi, Sandy and Kris (aka the super-stylists!) we pulled together this little vignette in a corner of the living area:

we filled the antique french dough bowl with beach ephemera...

...added glass lamps, coral and my painting...

...all gathered on the recycled timber console table

We're still waiting for lots of accessories to arrive, but it's all starting to come together. Oh, and sorry for the lack of photos, but as I forgot my camera, these were hastily snapped on my phone and I had to pick the best of a bad bunch!

Hope you all had a great weekend,

Clayfield - a work in progress

For some time now, I've been working on a very special project. My sister lives in a gorgeous old worker's cottage in the Brisbane suburb of Clayfield, and I've been helping her with its renovation. I absolutely love old Queenslanders, so not only do I get to work with my lovely sister, I also get to play with her very cute house!

We've spent a long time looking for the perfect dining table and chairs, and as space is limited we needed to find something quite petite. Take a look at what we found - a beautiful french bistro table and four bentwood chairs, with lovely pressed seats.

    isn't the detail lovely?

the base is cast iron - gorgeous

and we couldn't resist these antique french candle sticks

Now, for those of you who are unfamiliar with the Queenslander style, take a look at this home, which I posted about here. The front section is a colonial workers' cottage, and is almost identical to the home my sis owns.

    Isn't it gorgeous?

Not only are we looking for furniture and accessories, we're also in the process of finishing the installation of her new kitchen (I know, kitchens seem to be top of my renovation list at the moment!)

Today I'm off to source the splashback tiles, which is the last step before the room is complete. I can't wait to share the finished product with you, it's quite the transformation. The house was completely original, and the kitchen consisted of a cupboard, a sink and an ancient sandstone fireplace. We now have a charming and airy space which complements the original cottage beautifully. Of course, when the tiling is complete I'll be sure to post all the pics!

Oh, and do you remember this post about the little pony I found? Well, he now has a new home in a cute little cottage in Clayfield........!

They're finished...

...but not without a few hiccups! Here's the artwork I mentioned in my post on Tuesday.

I did have a huge small problem with these. When they were almost finished, I hung them together to check how they looked. That was when I saw it....

Aargh!! The canvases, in spite of being the same size, were in fact out by around 1cm. Now this does happen occasionally, and I'm usually really particular in checking this. But for some reason I didn't notice until it was far too late. After much teeth gnashing and a few choice words, I spent the next day painting another pink canvas.

Oh well, it's all done now and my client is thrilled, so I'm happy. And hey, now I have a canvas ready, I'll design another to go with it so it won't go to waste.

    Have a great day,

    Kerri x

Black + White = just right

    Hi all,

I'm madly trying to finish some artwork for a client, so today I thought I'd take a few more snaps of my studio. Of course, as I'm in the middle of working the majority of the room looks as though it's been ransacked, but I managed to find a few corners that were still photo-worthy!

One of the things I enjoy most about what I do is being able to paint and decorate with colours I may not otherwise choose for myself. Some of my favourite jobs have been commissions where I've had set colours to work with and I've had to then design works to suit the space.

These black and white paintings were done for a styling job I worked on last year. I like to keep a stockpile so that when the need arises I can quickly pull a scheme together, without searching high and low for just the right piece.

this old linen press holds all of my art materials

a small part of my collection of vases and jugs

    and some cushions to match

As much as I'd like to stay here and chat, I'm off to do some work. I'll be back tomorrow to show you what I've been up to.

Enjoy the rest of your day,
    Kerri xx

The big reveal...part 1

    Morning all,

Before I unveil the first of the paintings I mentioned here, I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who popped in to my blog and for all your lovely comments - you've made my week! This little bloggy community is so encouraging and supportive and I sincerely appreciate those of you who took the time to visit and drop me a line.

Ok, so here's the first look at the paintings for my young client's room. There will be two more to be added to this triptych, but this is the first.

Here it's previewed in my daughter's room - it has the best light

With these paintings, I wanted to achieve an aged, vintage look, so the background is heavily textured, almost like old plaster. I always try to add texture and movement into my backgrounds, as I find it adds that extra dimension. We've used a cherry blossom pattern, using the de Gournay wallpaper as inspiration, but as these works will be in a child's room, I wanted to keep it looking young and fresh, and a little less 'perfect'.

There's lots more to add to this room, including soft furnishings, window coverings, lamps and accessories, and I'm enjoying every minute of it!

We're doing white roman shades trimmed with pretty ribbon...

    like this

...similar to these (imagine with a pink trim)...

...and lots and lots of other goodies.

I  have a few other tricks up my sleeve for this room re-do. Let's just say that the artwork arrangement won't be quite what you'd expect. Intrigued? Curious? That's the plan! Tip..there was a little hint in my original post.

I'll show you some more of this little project soon, I promise.  I'm having too much fun for it to be over just yet!

    Happy Monday,
    Kerri x

Sneak Peek

    Hi all,

I don't know about you, but it seems the weeks are flying by, and the last few have been ridiculously busy. Today I plan to take a breather and get back into my studio for some long overdue art therapy.

At the moment I'm working on some paintings for a lovely young lady's bedroom. I'll be back tomorrow to show you the work in progress, but here's a look at some of the inspiration behind the design scheme:
