My project revealed...with a twist

Remember this post, when I mentioned a project I was working on - the finishing touches to the makeover of my youngest daughter's bedroom? Well, by now you've probably realised things took a little longer than expected, but in retrospect I'm glad I took my time. This reveal has a bit of a twist, which I'll explain shortly, but first - take a look at my hand-painted floor rug:

When I first posted about this project, I'd designed this pattern to use in my daughter's room. Of course, once I got started I realised it was a lot more involved than first thought  - I know, I know - why are you not surprised? Anyway, I've decided to take my time with it, as it will be a major design element in her room. But I did happen to have a large piece of canvas in my studio, which proved to be the perfect warm-up to the main event. Btw, please ignore the creases on the right-hand side - the canvas has been stored in my studio and I was too impatient to let it straighten out before I took these pics!

The hardest part of this whole exercise is the placement of the pattern. In any project like this, it's really obvious if the design is out of alignment, so geometry played a big part in getting it just right. Pity I didn't retain stuff like this instead of those useless phone numbers!

Over the years, I've made many of these canvas floor rugs, and they're so versatile, not to mention practical. I always finish mine with a good few coats of varnish, which means the design is protected and the rug can be scrubbed clean. They're perfect for kids' rooms, and can be simply rolled up and stored away. One of my clients commissioned me to paint custom- designed rugs for her kids, and when they grow out of them, she plans to keep them to pass on to her grandchildren. How sweet is that?

oh, and they're not just for the floor either!

Hope you enjoyed the reveal, in spite of it being not quite what you expected. And if anyone is interested in a custom-designed rug, please drop me a line - I'd love to make one for you. Have a great day, and for those of you having a little wager on today's Melbourne Cup, best of luck!

Bedroom Makeover Mark II...the saga

Cast your mind back about a month or so, and you might remember the makeover of my eldest daughter's room. Of course, things all and sundry have managed to slow things down to a snail's pace, but the painting is almost finished, and I'm now working on the fun stuff - all the details to be precise. In my travels, I came across this bed head, which I picked up for all of $15....score!

Now, I'm not sure whether we'll be using it in this room, as we're tossing up between this and a large painting. But for that price it was far too good to pass up, so we'll see. Either way, it will get a nice new cover, and I'm thinking how great it could look with new tufting, like this one by Bryn Alexandra:

...but as I'm rather partial to a print or two, I think it could look sensational like this:

But of course, every decent teaser has a little twist in the tail, and a few surprises, so let's just say I'll be doing my own take on this look. I'm really trying to get this done, but with things being so crazy busy lately, it may take a little while longer to pull it all together.

Thank you too, for all your lovely comments, emails, (and orders!) on my paintings, and my new Etsy shop. You are wonderful. Can't say it enough.

Bedroom Makeover Mark II

Now that I've almost finished daughter #2's bedroom makeover (I did say almost), it's now time to concentrate on #1's room. It's long overdue for a total redo, and we've been working on a design scheme based on her favourite colour - blue. We've bought some gorgeous new bed linen:

    ...some ginger jar lamps..

    ..a new slipcovered bed head..

..and, of course, no room is complete without art and photos

..couldn't resist an excuse to use one of my favourite pics

So that's what we'll be doing these school holidays (in between visits to the beach, of course). How about you?

A work in progress....

If there's one thing I've learned since starting this blog, it's not to open my big mouth and promise to post pics of a project - before the project is all done and dusted. Of course, I blab anyway and then try to work madly to get things finished in time for my self-inflicted deadline. On Friday, I mentioned this room, and how it had inspired the finishing touches for my daughter's bedroom. It's still a work in progress, but here's a little look at what's been happening...

a little peek at the design

a clean white canvas ready for some zhushing!

I know I'll be accused of being a terrible tease, but I can't help it - I like to show at least a little of what I'm working on. It's cold and raining here today, so it gives me the perfect opportunity to get to stuck in. I promise to show you the room as soon as it's looking all nice and pretty.

Oh, and in other news, I've finally organised my Facebook page, so if you'd like to see some sneak peeks and previews before I blog about them, pop on over here, or click the Facebook link in my sidebar. I'd love to see you there!

When inspiration strikes

This picture of Windsor Smith's beautiful bedroom in House Beautiful has been saved in my files for quite a while, purely because I love the all-over pattern in the fabric. When I came across it again yesterday, the final piece of the puzzle finally fell into place. You see, I've been looking for ideas to finish my youngest daughter's bedroom, and I finally found just what I was looking for when I rediscovered this image:

     embroidered satin by Bergamo Fabrics

This image is only the starting point for what I had in mind, but sometimes that's all it takes. I'll be working on it over the weekend, so I hope to have something to show you on Monday. Although if this past week is anything to go by, the best laid plans....well, you know the rest!

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend,

Fab Friday finds

For many years, I was a garage sale junkie. Every Saturday morning, I'd wake at the crack of dawn to trawl the local sales for treasures. And what treasures there were to be found! I was constantly amazed at the things people were discarding. Think huge cedar chests of drawers, beautiful carved mirrors, picture frames, the odd chaise longue or two; you name it. I bought it.

I've restored and sold many of these over the years, but one of the advantages of living on acreage is that I have a huge shed. A shed which is still full of goodies, either awaiting restoration, or inspiration, or both. So I thought I'd share a few of these with you all each week, and we can discuss what should become of them. Ok, I'm starting small this week, because it's pouring with rain at the moment and they were much easier to wrangle than a marble-topped dining table!

This chair is one that I managed to pick up for $1, and the little chandy for $5. The chair is painted a fetching shade of mission brown (ugh!) but the chandy had already been given the white treatment.

The chair will probably end up as my new home office chair, and I'm even considering painting it in a colour other than white (shocking I know!) All I need to decide on is a pretty fabric for the seat cushion, and I'll be done. And I'm thinking of hanging the chandy in the corner above my desk - you know, a bit quirky and off centre?

So, what do you think? I love hearing your thoughts, so any ideas you have will be welcome.

Have a great weekend everyone, I'll be spending mine adding the finishing touches to the kitchen reno, so I promise to post all the pics next week. Stay tuned!

My big plan...the epic part 1

We moved into this house with big plans. The 80's is an era not fondly remembered in terms of fashionable interiors - after all, Mission Brown was de rigeur, as was exposed brick and timber, timber and more timber. But the house was in a great location on two and a half acres, with a creek meandering through, set high on a ridge to capture views and cooling breezes. We jumped at the chance to buy, knowing it needed some renovation and much redecoration.

The kitchen was a bit of a conundrum for me. Although it was not to my taste, it was relatively new and completely functional. We had more urgent things to tackle, like the bathroom. The layout was fine, so it sat on the backburner, and its ugliness kept nagging at me until I couldn't stand it any more.

    I wanted this...

    source unknown, sorry

    and of course this...

    But I had this...

    special, isn't it?

So I thought hey, hubby's away for three days, I'll surprise him by painting all the timber, covering that ugly brick, and I'll give it a spiffy little makeover. No biggie, right? WRONG!!

Now, those who know me would say that I'm something of an optimist. Impulsive and completely delusional are probably more appropriate. Three days - no drama, it's just a little tart up, how long could it take?

So...here I am, picking the paint off every exposed part of my body, but I have to tell you, I'm LOVING IT! The results are, I hope, going to be so worth it, I can't wait to put it all back together and gaze upon its beauty. But the voice of reason (hubs of course) advised that to rush things now would mean a less than perfect outcome, and believe me, there's no way I'm taking the chance after all my blood, sweat, tears and tantrums. So I know you'll understand when I tell you I promise to show you everything as soon as humanly possible.  Until then, it's back to work. See you soon with all the good stuff - can't wait to share it all with you!

Bedroom makeover

My youngest daughter has very definite ideas about how her bedroom should look. For her 7th birthday, she decided she wanted her walls painted pink. Not pastel pink, HOT pink. Every wall. After much aggravation discussion, we agreed that she should have one wall hot pink, the others white.

She loved her room for quite a few years, changing bedlinen, furniture and accessories daily often. I would arrive home to find she'd completely re-arranged everything. By herself. Dragging things if necessary. Determination is not something she lacks. Anyway, she announced one day she wanted a whole new look. White. Everything - walls, bedlinen, with a few silver/taupe accessories. To say I was surprised was an understatement. But I wasted no time organising to have her room repainted.

Here's the before (actually during) :

And here are a few of where we're at so far:

I love this photo - she was little five-year-old flower girl

We're still working on some things here. I'm painting some new artwork as we speak, and we need to replace the window coverings, but she loves it so everyone's happy. I should add that she plans on a career in interior design. Somehow I think she will do exactly as she says!

Enjoy the rest of your day

    Kerri x
