Big Island or Kauai

    Aloha Hawaii travelers,
After we recently answered the question 'Is November a good time to visit Kona Hawaii?', we are about to talk about choosing the Hawaiian Island best suiting for your vacation in Hawaii. With Aloha Airlines not being available anymore for flying to Hawaii or for Interisland flights and rising gas prices, cheap airline tickets to Hawaii or between the islands are hard to get for your Hawaii vacation, especially for high seasons like summer or winter season.

In the past, Hawaii traveler loved to do some island hopping on their Hawaii vacation, especially when it was their first time visit to Hawaii. This allowed them a few days on each Hawaii island, get a first impression of best beaches, things to do and to see and find out which island they will come back for a longer vacation. As Hawaii hosts, we always recommended to 'just' visit two islands in order not to be rushed and enjoy each of the island as much as possible.

Big Island or Kauai Vacation? Now, this recommendation of limiting your Hawaii visit to two islands or even just one, becomes even more a necessity when you are a budget traveler and don't have unlimited funds available for your Hawaii vacation. Extra Interisland flights can be quite expensive. If you have to choose for one, the early and late flights are offering the best rates. Here are a few Hawaii travel tips:

Yes, the Superferry can help Hawaii visitors somewhat but it's really limited to island hopping between Oahu and Maui and vice versa. Rates are affordable, tourists don't have to deal with early check-in at Airports in Honolulu and Kahului and you can enjoy a voyage with lovely Hawaiian island scenery. Ocean conditions are very calm in summer.

Try to book direct flights into Maui or Kona or Hilo Big Island in order to avoid having to pay for an extra Interisland flight. When you have a direct Hawaii flight into Maui, you might want to plan your Maui vacation and forget about visiting other islands, except maybe a family outing to Oahu with the Superferry. You've got some really nice beaches right there, on Maui. It's a little touristy and not that easy to find that private corner on a beach but definitely beautiful. Maui is the paradise for surfers, windsurfers or board surfers.

Quite a number of Hawaii visitors cannot make up their mind whether it will be a Big Island vacation or a visit to Kauai. Well, making a decision between Kauai and the Big Island is like deciding between oranges and apples.

What are major differences? Kauai is the Garden Island, meaning it's green and lush because it has frequent rain showers but they don't last long. You can walk on stretches of white sand beaches for ever, at lot of the times even without meeting any people! Meaning no Maitai or restaurant either. Pack yourself a picnic and you will be happy as could be. Kauai hiking is great as well. We loved to kayak the Wailua River and combined it with a hike to a spectacular waterfall. It's definitely a laid back island and when getting away from the tourist places like Poipu, you will still find old Hawaii at many Kauai locations.

The Big Island is the island of adventure. Beaches are not as endless as on Kauai but the West Coast spoils visitors with white sand beaches and sunny dry weather all year round. Even if you are not into activities, at least you have lots of options to choose from. Big Island things to do include many beyond the ordinary: Stargazing on Mauna Kea Summit, watching a live volcano at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, visiting Waipio Valley on the Hamakua Coast and Pololu Valley Lookouts on North Kohala (even the walk into the valley is easy and the most amazing ocean and cliff scenery awaits you), or attend one of the Hawaiian luaus (I like the one at the Marriott at Waikoloa Beach Resort) .

If you decide for a Big Island vacation, the big question is where to stay on the Big Island. The West coast, the Kohala and Kona Coast, is the sunny side with lots of white sand beaches (most famous Hapuna und Mauna Kea Beach). Hotels on this coast can be expensive. If you are on a budget, I recommend a vacation rental with a short drive to the beaches. When deciding for a rental on the East Coast (Hilo side, Hamakua Coast, Puna), anticipate more rain but beautiful tropical rainforest will reward you. Hawaii vacation rental rates are considerably cheaper on the East coast of the Big Island.

Hope this helps planning your Hawaii trip. Have a wonderful stay in Paradise. Aloha, Pua Hawaii Vacations

Best Time to Visit Hawaii

Welcome to the Hawaiian Islands in Spring 2008 Hooray, I won another time 10 points at Yahoo for 'Best Answer' in the Hawaii section! Well, big deal but to tell you the truth it's really quite interesting how many people are planning trips to the islands and are totally overwhelmed by the complex nature what it implies to prepare their Hawaii vacation.

Most of them already get stuck with the question 'Which Hawaiian Island to visit on first vacation in Hawaii', next seemingly hard to answer 'Should they book a hotel or a vacation rental in Hawaii' and again the most reoccurring question, at least in Hawaii Yahoo Answers over the time I have been answering questions about Hawaii vacation is 'When is the best time to visit Hawaii?'.

I noticed when coming across this favorite question 'When is the best time to travel to Hawaii?', it actually entails two parts, namely 'When is the best weather for a Hawaii vacation?' and equally important to Hawaii visitors 'When is the cheapest time to visit Hawaii?'. There are quite a number of misconceptions out there among Hawaii lovers who plan their first visit to the islands. Let's be as clear as possible and provide some straight forward information for ensuring your best Hawaii Vacation, at least what you can do on your part.

'When is the best weather for a Hawaii vacation?'

There is no denying Hawaii weather, which ever island, is generally very nice and warm all year around - exceptions can happen. Believe it or not, it can even rain in Hawaii, bigger probability is during winter months, but definitely beats ice, snow and frost on the Mainland! Summer months July and August can be very hot but if your are traveling to Hawaii with kids who still attend school, you really don't have much of a choice. You have to travel to the islands during school vacation!

'When is the cheapest time to visit Hawaii?'

Cheapest air travel tickets to Hawaii, Maui, Kauai, Big Island or Oahu, and car rentals on the islands are during Hawaii's low season months:
April - mid June (except Easter if it falls into April)
    Sept - Nov (except Thanksgiving)
Plan your Hawaii for after Labor Day and you will be having an wonderful vacation in Hawaii at a decent price.

And don't let yourself fool...the winter months Dec - March are our high season, when Hawaii beaches + restaurants are crowded, air fares to Hawaii and car rentals are extremely expensive, vacation rentals and hotels are booked way ahead at high rates.

If you are not independently wealthy, best to stay away from a Hawaii Christmas Vacation, when hotels and resorts are booked in advance at 100% occupancy. Air fares to Maui Lihue Airport or Kona International Airport can take a big chunk out of your vacation money. Not to mention outrageous car rental fees during Hawaii vacation at Christmas. When you visit Hawaii, you visit an island, and a limited number of cars for rents are available.

After having read our entire post about best time for Hawaii travel and learned by now that the cheapest time to visit Hawaii is between April and May, it's time to book your Hawaii vacation rental for Spring 2008 now!

Good luck for finding your best rental deal! Aloha, Pua Hawaii Vacations
    p.s.
Mahalo to WahineStyle for our Hawaiian post girl. It's beautiful Amber!

How to have a great Maui vacation and Save Money!

Save Money on your Maui VacationHave a great Maui Vacation and Save Money

Our Best Hawaii Vacation Blog provides you with comprehensive information about all the Hawaiian Islands to make it easier for Hawaii travelers to decide which island they want to visit for their Hawaii vacation, whether they were looking for a cheap Hawaii vacation, coast inexpensive vacation condo Kona Hawaii, family Maui vacation rental Hawaii or a Kailua Oahu Hawaii private home.

Hawaii vacation means to most visitors relaxing on white sand beaches and swimming in the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean when the Mainland is haunted by cold or rainy weather. The best Maui beaches are located on the West Coast from Kapalua to the historic port of Lahaina with lots of Maui resorts. South Maui is another beach attraction area. Kaanapali is the big family oriented resort area with about 3 miles of white sandy beaches. Whalers Village, a seaside mall with about 48 shops and restaurants is very popular among all Maui visitors. For budget accommodations, Maui condos in Honokowai, Kahana and Napili (built in the 70s), offer excellent bargains at a great location, in a short distance from Kapalua and Kaanapali resort areas.

South Maui can be considered the driest and hottest area on Maui. So, it’s very popular with sun lovers. Kihei on a 7-mile stretch of white sand beaches provides Maui’s best vacation bargain. It’s just the opposite of a Maui vacation at Wailea 5-star resort hotels like the Four Seasons and the Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa. Wailea is the ‘playground’ for the celebrities. Wailea has warm, clear water with lots of tropical fish and year-round sunshine and clear blue skies.

If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle, then Makena might be right for you. You can spend a quiet, relaxing vacation on Makena beach. It’s long ways to drive though to any kind of Maui activities. So make sure serenity is what you want for your Maui beach vacation.

As most everybody rents a car for their Maui vacation (there is no public transportation on Maui!), except from the few visitors who take a shuttle to their Maui resort and don’t move from the beach, unless they get a Mai Tai at the beach bar, a trip to famous Haleakala Volcano in Haleakala National Park is a must.

When arriving at Maui Airports Kahului Airport or Kapalua Airport for your Maui vacation, pick up vacation brochures for Hawaii right there. If you want to be better prepared for your best Hawaii vacation, order your free vacation brochures for Maui ahead of your trip or buy the ‘Maui Revealed’ book as your travel companion for your Maui travel.

You want to know what the weather is like right now on Maui, check here:

Which Hawaiian Island is your Favorite Vacation Spot?

Which Hawaiian island is your favorite vacation spot?

After our recent contemplation on the
Kohala Coast weather, we think it’s time to talk about which of the Hawaiian Islands do you like best and why. Obviously, we decided that the Kohala Coast on the Big Island is our favorite. Otherwise we would not write this Big Island vacation blog about it, would we?

However, most of the regular Hawaii travelers have their own special
Hawaiian island they prefer as their tropical getaway. Lots of you love Kauai, the garden island, as it is lush and green, Maui attracts with its surfing beaches and Oahu’s Waikiki Beach Hotels did not lose any of their tourist attraction to Hawaii travelers from around the world, especially from Japan. So, what island is your favorite and why?

We are looking forward to hearing from Hawaii travelers which island they love best for their Hawaii vacation. A hui hou (till next time).
